In the heart of the Mediterranean, on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas, Albania is fast becoming one of the world's most interesting getaways. Still relatively unspoiled by globalization, tourists will notice an inspiring mixture of civilizations and cultures - making this European country truly unique.
"Albania the last secret of Europe"
10-day round trip Valid from April 1st to October 31st , 2020
Albania, just two hours away by plane, is considered the “Last Secret of Europe” with four
UNESCO World Heritage Sites - an attractive travel destination in southern Europe. Albania is still a "terra incognita" for many in Western Europe. It is precisely for this reason that the country exerts a unique attraction on visitors. The fascinating landscape, the hospitality of the inhabitants, the historical sites are all good reasons to get to know the secret of Albania. It is precisely the originality that can still be found in this country that makes it worth visiting. A highlight of this trip is the detour to Ohrid, the pearl of Macedonia.
The hotels selected are 3 - 4 star hotels and can be viewed on the Internet. You can travel from any German airport, Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn, Frankfurt/M. Munich with Air Berlin, Germanwings, Lufthansa to Tirana's "Mother Teresa" airport. In Albania, a German-speaking tour guide with a local coach will be available.
Day 1, flight to Albania. Airport - capital Tirana approx. 25 km
Immediately after arrival we drive to the port city of Durres, which has been known since ancient times. In 1966 the Roman amphitheater, which had room for 20,000 visitors, was discovered by chance. In the vaults of the theater, Byzantine frescoes in the chapel bear witness to the numerous cultures that left their mark here. We are by the sea and so it is understandable that there are fish specialties for dinner. Overnight stay in Durres. Overnight stay/Dec./Fr.
2.Tag Tag . Berat - Apollonia u. Vlora ca. 200 km
From Durres it is about 90 km to Berat (UNESCO cultural heritage site) , which is called the "white city of 1,000 windows" . The houses built up the slope to the castle once had a large window on the front, hence the name. The colorful frescoes in the churches of the upper town, many mosques and the valuable icons in the Onufri Museum bear witness to the coexistence of different religions and cultures in this city. There is a great panorama of the upper town from the old stone Kurt Pasha arched bridge. The ancient excavations of Apollonia are on the program later. In ancient times, Apollonia was one of the 30 cities that were dedicated to the Greek god Apollo. "Urbs magna et gravis - a large and important city" is what Cucero is said to have said about Apollonia. Overnight stay in Vlore. AC/DE/FR
3rd day, wild and romantic south coast, Vlora-Saranda approx. 130km
We drive on a very well-developed road from Vlora at sea level through an enchanting landscape up to the once feared Llogara Pass (1,000 m). There are numerous hairpin bends that lead back down to the coast. Then almost 60 km of wild and romantic Ionian Sea Riviera coast await us before we reach our day's destination, Saranda, where we are greeted by palm trees. If weather and time permit, we will definitely stop for a swim and a jump into the sea. Two things will particularly catch our eye today, if not on the previous days. Firstly, there are the numerous concrete mushrooms that lie in the landscape. The then dictator Enver Hoxha had 700,000 of them built in the 1970s out of paranoid fear of invaders. Before our day's destination, Saranda, the Greek island of Corfu is just an hour's ferry away. A day of enjoyment! Overnight stay in Saranda. AC/DE/FR.
Day 4, The ruins of Butrint. approx. 50 km
It is only 20 km to the ancient city of Butrint (UNESCO cultural heritage), where we find a mysterious, almost romantic atmosphere. A small paradise in the middle of ancient trees. Butrint's location and landscape make it an experience even for those who are not archaeological specialists. Greeks and Romans were here and Julius Caesar consecrated the city as a veterinarian paradise. The afternoon is free - swimming - shopping - excursion to Corfu! In the evening we enjoy Albanian specialties in a restaurant below the Lekursit castle. Overnight stay in Saranda. Overnight stay/departure/breakfast.
Day 5, Gjirokastra city of 1,000 steps, Korca. approx. 200 km
The road leads via the Byzantine monastery of Mesopotami, passes and the Drino valley to Gjirokaster (a UNESCO cultural heritage site). A walk through the town takes visitors back centuries. Even if the climb to the castle is arduous, the view of the once Ottoman town with its stone roofs is worth it. Overnight stay in Korce, near the Macedonian border, overnight stay in Korca. Overnight stay/Descent/Fr.
Day 6, Ohrid-Macedonia, small pilgrimage in Lake Odrid. Approx. 80 km.
Icons are the highlight of the collection of the Museum of Medieval Art in Korca: which we visit first on this day. On a stroll through the city we can find all sorts of oddities at the Turkish market. At Pogradec we come to the border with Macedonia and to the shores of the crystal-clear Lake Ohrid. From a distance you can see the monastery of Sveti Naum, the most popular pilgrimage site in Macedonia. Many pilgrims from Macedonia and Albania light candles here; the Byzantine monastery was built in 895. Overnight stay in Ohrid.
Day 7. Ohrid, UNESCO World Heritage City.
Ohrid (UNESCO cultural heritage ). Located directly on Lake Ohrid is the pearl of the Macedonian cities. The blue, purple and green of the lake is reflected in the magnificent frescoes by Byzantine painters in the churches. In the morning we will visit the old town, the Clemens and Sophia churches in a city where Bulgarians, Turks and Serbs once lived peacefully together under treaty.
The afternoon is also free. You can either enjoy the wonderful waters of Lake Ohrid or stroll through the Ottoman district of Korco. Overnight stay in Ohrid.
Day 8, Lively capital city of Tirana. Approx. 170 km
A varied journey takes us over passes and through valleys from Ohrid to the capital of Albania, Tirana. The city's future mayor, Edi Rama, an artist himself, transformed the grey existence during the dictatorship into a colourful, lively life. In addition to a tour of the colourful city, we visit the National Museum and the Et'hem Bey Mosque. As in many cities, the illegal settlements on the outskirts of the city represent a huge contrast to the pulsating centre. In the evening, we want to enjoy the delicacies of the Balkans such as grilled meat and crisp salads in a nice restaurant. We have now also got used to raki or Albanian cognac. Two nights in Tirana in a centrally located hotel. Overnight/Date/Friday-Tirana.
9th day, National hero Georg Johannes Kastriota-Scanderbeg in Kruja. ca. 35km
In the mountain town of Kruja, we visit the very well designed museum of the Albanian national hero Skanderbeg, who once protected Europe from the Ottomans, in the morning. A must for every visitor to Albania. Before lunch with an Albanian family, we visit the Dolmateke monastery of the Bektashi dervish order. Not to be forgotten - at the oriental bazaar in Kruja, you can haggle for all kinds of souvenirs and buy the famous Skanderberg cognac. In Tirana, we say goodbye to Albania with a specialty meal. In the evening, there are numerous bars and music clubs in the beautiful green camps. Overnight/Date/Friday-Tirana.
Day 10, farewell to Albania. Mother Teresa Airport. approx. 25km
The morning is time for a stroll through the traditional bazaar, where you are sure to find one or two souvenirs. Short visits to the city center around Scanderbeg Square, etc.

Albania, just two hours away by plane, is considered the “Last Secret of Europe” with four UNESCO World Heritage sites and an attractive travel destination in Southern Europe.
An unspoiled country with a Mediterranean climate, impressive mountains and its beautiful, fine sandy Ionian coast, which are one of the last unspoiled corners of the Mediterranean, it seems to be Europe's last secret. From the Illyrians to democracy: 5000 years of history. We find these traces in the archaeological remains that have survived to our times, such as monasteries, castles, amphitheaters, churches and historical sites.Albania is a country of great hospitality that gladly welcomes foreign visitors. Don't expect everything to be perfect, but the adventure of traveling through a country like Albania will surely be a positive, very beautiful and new experience.
1st Day - SHKODRA Driving distance approx. 85km.
Your destination is Shkodra, the third largest city in Albania. The city in the north lies on Lake Skutari, the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, of which about a third belongs to Albania. According to legend, the wife of the youngest builder was walled up alive here to fulfill an oracle's prophecy. The Catholic cathedral, ethnographic museum, old bazaar and mosque are all worth a visit. Overnight/ Date/Friday-Shkodra.
City of Kruja, the journey first takes you to the mountain town of Kruja. The holy city of Albania became famous through the uprising of Skanderbeg, the national hero who fought against the Turkish occupiers in the 15th century. Apollonia, On the way we visit the ruins of Apollonia - once a Greek colony dedicated to the god Apollo. We look at the ancient theater and the facade of the Agonothetes Temple (it is the current landmark of Apollonia), visit the still relatively well-preserved Odeon and the Stoa (walking hall) and visit the Byzantine monastery with the Church of St. Mary from the 14th century. Apollonia developed into a wealthy, large city during the Roman Empire and is one of 30 cities dedicated to the god Apollo. Cicero described it as "magna urbs et gravis" (a magnificent and graceful city). Today Apollonia is one of the most important archaeological sites in Albania. It is not just the columns of the temple and the Stoa, the stone rows of seats or the archways that make an impression. Today the Archaeological Museum, various excavations and the Church of St. Mary are reminders of an active life in antiquity.
City of Vlora , towards the evening you reach Vlora, which is located in the south-western part of the country, where the Ionian Sea and the Adriatic Sea meet. Here the sea becomes deeper, clearer and the coast rockier. In the evening, a short visit to the Muradie Mosque and Independence Square. Overnight/Date/Friday - Vlora.

There are many panoramic views along the way. On one side the crystal clear sea shimmers, lined with long, lonely sandy beaches, on the other side rugged mountain ranges rise steeply into the sky. Pretty villages, lemon and orange trees and olive plantations line the road. Within the castle walls you will find the weapons museum, which exhibits a collection of firearms from the last few centuries. You leave the "stone city" In the evening we reach the Adriatic coast, the city of Durres . Overnight /Date/Friday-Durres.

Albania - Getting to know the “last secret of Europe”.
Albania, the sunny country of Europe, just two hours away by plane, is considered the "last secret of Europe" with four UNESCO world cultural sites and is an attractive travel destination in southern Europe. For many in Western Europe, Albania is still a "terra incognita" - an unknown country. It is precisely for this reason that the country exerts a strange attraction on visitors. The fascination of the landscape, the hospitality of the inhabitants, the historical sites are all good reasons to get to know the secret of Albania. It is precisely the originality that one still encounters in this country that makes the country worth visiting.
Two seas, the Adriatic and the Ionian Sea with 350 km of coastline, three lakes, Lake Skadar, Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa make the country very attractive and popular with western tourists.
Arrival in Tirana-Albania. At the airport in Tirana our German-speaking tour guide will welcome you with a local coach.
Drive north to Shkodra, located on Lake Skutari, the largest lake on the Balkan Peninsula, about half of which belongs to Albania. Shkodra is the third largest city in Albania, with a very Venetian feel. Every family has 4-5 bicycles and is the third largest city in Europe in terms of the number of bicycles. City tour with the Catholic cathedral and the Rozafa citadel. Overnight + half board in Shkodra.
In the morning we cycle through small villages about 15 kilometers to the Montenegro border along the Buna River. We cycle about 15 kilometers through small fields and uphill to reach the highest point of the tour at 1,000 meters above sea level.
Another beautiful view of the lake and the first glimpses of Lake Skutari, the city of Shkodra, the Albanian Alps and Montenegro with today's destination Virpazar. From here we cycle along the shore of Lake Skadarsko, the largest lake on the Balkan island. It lies on the border between Montenegro and Albania. A beautiful bike tour through old chestnut forests, through the mountains of the Rumija Mountains above the shore of the lake with beautiful views to Virpazar - Montenegro awaits us. The bus ride along the mountain coast takes us first past Sv. Stefan to Budva. City tour of Budva with the old town and the castle. Optional detour to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Kotor (optional). In the afternoon we drive back to Albania to our hotel in Shkodra. Overnight + half board in Shkodra.
In the morning we cycle through small villages about 30 kilometers to the Vau i Deja reservoir.
At around 9am we board the boat at the Koman dam and sail for 2 hours through a beautiful bay bordered by Dolomite walls. Then we cycle along the Valbona river to the village of Valbona in the middle of the Albanian Alps.
In the afternoon, a short hike around the mountains of the village. Overnight + half board in Valbona Valley.
In the morning we leave the beautiful Albanian Alps and cycle directly from the hotel through the Valbona river valley about 50 km to the Fierza boat station. Boat trip at 10 a.m. through the Koman dam takes 2 hours back to the last dam, Vau i Dejes. From here we cycle about 30 km to the national highway. Bus transfer to the capital Tirana about 2 hours. In the afternoon we stroll around Tirana. Overnight + half board in Tirana.
In the morning we drive south towards the city of Elbasan, where we take a short break. Travel by bus with bicycle trailer over passes and through valleys along the Roman Via Egnatia to Lake Ohrid. From the Qafa-Thana Pass at a height of 1,000 m, our cycling trip begins along the western shore of the lake, observing small villages, mountain ranges and wild nature until we reach the destination of the city of Pogradec. Overnight + half board in Pogradec.
Departure by bus to the town of Korca and a short city tour. Our bike tour begins on the Korca plateau and we are accompanied by the surrounding landscape of mountains, apple fields and wild plants. In front of us are countless passes and valleys that lead into the mountains and over the Barmash Pass (1,159 m) to Gërmenjë, where we can enjoy a lunch break. We then cycle to the small country town of Leskovik, located at 900 m, in the mountains east of the Vjosa valley, near the border with Greece. We go downhill to Carshova and follow the Vjosa valley, bordered by sky-high mountain peaks, until we reach the town of Permet. Overnight + half board in Permet.
In the morning we cycle to Kelcyra and see the jagged “Trebeshina peak”, typical of the rugged mountain world. We continue along the Vjosa valley, tributaries of the Drinos, following another gorge. This opens up into a plain with the city of Gjirokastër, “City of Stones”, which lies majestically high up on the slope. Take the opportunity to explore the narrow cobblestone streets and Ottoman houses. In the afternoon the bus takes us to the Muzina Pass. This is where our cycling tour today begins. You will reach the mountainous region with wonderful curves and Mediterranean flair until we reach the eternal water source “Blue Eye”. In the afternoon we make a detour to Lekursi Castle across Saranda Bay opposite the island of Corfu. Overnight + half board in Saranda.
In the morning we cycle to the UNESCO-protected ancient city of Butrint, which with its Lion Gate, theater, forum and aqueduct as well as the temples of Asclepius and Athena is one of the most important sights in Albania.
Around midday we head north along a roller coaster, which offers us some beautiful views of the rugged coastline. A climb takes us up to a rocky plateau. The route continues up and down, cycling through open landscapes, with the breathtaking mountain backdrop to your right and the sea to your left. A short and interesting visit is the fortress of Ali Pasha, built on a small peninsula opposite Corfu. Finally, there is a descent to the long beach of Himara.
Overnight stay + half board in Himara.
Today's stage is as demanding as it is spectacular. On our bike tour we climb the Logara Pass, which is 1,000 m above the blue Ionian Sea, and cross the surrounding national park, which is home to the black pine, the otter and the golden eagle. After lunch we take a long descent to the coastal town. Overnight + half board in Vlora.
We first visit the ruins of Apollonia, a Doric foundation from the 6th century BC - with impressive relics from Greek and Roman times. Berat is known as the "White City of 1000 Windows" - a city in the Ottoman style. Short visit to the castle area, with small houses. Continue to Tirana. Overnight + half board in Tirana.
After breakfast, transfer to Tirana airport and return flight in the late afternoon. Arrival in Vienna.
The program is subject to change.
The route mostly runs on small side roads that are mostly asphalted, with small sections also on well-paved gravel roads. There is also increased traffic on the way into the towns. This bike tour, which is full of experiences, requires a moderate level of fitness, as there are days when you will climb more than 1,000 metres. After arrival at Tirana airport, the German-English speaking tour guide will pick you up. Transfer from Tirana airport to the starting hotel and city tour with Scanderbeg Square, Ethem Bey Mosque and the district of the communist nomenclature. Overnight + half board in Tirana.
The first stage of the cycling tour begins with a bus ride over passes and through valleys, along the Roman Via Egnatia to Lake Ohrid. From the Qafa-Thana Pass (1,000 m above sea level) our cycling tour begins with a descent and leads along the western shore of the lake with small villages, accompanied by mountain ranges and wild nature, to the day's destination - the city of Pogradec. Overnight + half board in Pogradec.
Departure by bus to the town of Korca and a short city tour. Our cycling tour begins in the Erseke plateau along the adjacent mountains, with apple orchards and wild plants. In front of us are countless passes and valleys that stretch into the mountains and over the Barmash Pass (1,159 m) to Gërmenjë, where we enjoy a lunch break. We continue cycling to the small country town of Leskovik, located at 900 m, in the mountains east of the Vjosa Valley and approach the border with Greece. We go downhill to Carshova and follow the Vjosa Valley, surrounded by sky-high mountain peaks, until we reach the town of Permet. Overnight + half board in Permet.
In the morning we cycle to Kelcyra and look at the jagged Trebeshina peak, characteristic of the rugged mountain world. We continue along the Vjosa Valley, tributaries of the Drinos - following another gorge. This opens into a plain with the UNESCO World Heritage city of Gjirokastër "City of Stones", which lies majestically high up on the slope. Take the opportunity to explore the narrow cobblestone streets and Ottoman houses. In the afternoon we head towards the Ionian Sea through mountainous terrain with wonderful curves and Mediterranean flair to Saranda Bay. We make a detour to Lekursi Castle and end the day in Saranda Bay, opposite the island of Corfu. Overnight + half board in Saranda.
In the morning we cycle to the ancient UNESCO World Heritage city of Butrint, which is one of the most important sights in Albania with its Lion Gate, theater, forum and aqueduct as well as the temples of Asclepius and Athena. Around midday we head north and take a ride up and down, which offers us some beautiful views of the rugged coast. A climb takes us up to a rocky plateau. We continue up and down, through open landscapes, with the breathtaking mountain backdrop to the right and the sea to the left. Finally, we cycle along small bays with turquoise blue sea water to the long beach of Himare. Overnight + half board in Himara.
Today's stage is as demanding as it is spectacular. On our bike tour we climb the Logara Pass, historically known as the "Caesar Pass", which is 1,000 m above the blue Ionian Sea, and cross the surrounding national park, which is home to the black pine, otters and golden eagles. After lunch we take a long descent along the Vlora Bay in the southern Adriatic to the coastal town of Radhime-Vlora. Overnight + half board in Vlora.
In the morning we cycle along Vlora Bay and the city promenade through a wild pine forest to Zvernec Lagoon. We continue north to visit the ruins of Apollonia, a Doric foundation from the 6th century BC - with impressive relics from Greek and Roman times. We continue to the port city of Durres and visit the Roman amphitheater, the thermal baths, the Byzantine forum and the Venetian Torre. Overnight + half board in Tirana.
After breakfast, depending on flight time, transfer to Tirana airport and return flight.
However, the bus is available for the occasional climb. We recommend wearing a bike helmet!
